Cook Orthodontics, P.C. is committed to providing quality orthodontic treatment and care to patients in Evansville, Newburgh, Boonville, Princeton, Fort Branch, IN and the surrounding areas. Whether you are a patient with Invisalign® or braces, Dr. Devon R. Cook works hard to give each patient personalized service in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Below are some emergency situations that you may encounter while at home, as well as treatment options you can try prior to making an appointment.

If you have a broken appliance that is meant to be used for treatment, call our office immediately to schedule an appointment.

Sore Teeth

If you are experiencing sore teeth or gums after an appointment, we recommend taking an acetaminophen or non-aspirin pain reliever while you adjust to your new braces. Other home remedies include warm salt-water rinses, using a heating pad, or applying a warm washcloth to the sore area.

Wire Irritation

It is not uncommon to experience discomfort due to the wires of your braces. First, try applying some of the wax you received at your first visit. For extra relief, you can press down on the wire with an eraser tip, or put a cotton ball underneath the wire to help soften the area. Lastly, if the wire is extremely painful, you can use sterilized nail clippers or scissors to cut it down.

Loose Bracket

If your primary wire or bracket comes loose, the first thing you should do is call our office to see if it needs to be re-fitted. You may encounter a situation where your wire needs to be cut, or a bracket needs to be removed at home. If this happens, use fingernail clippers or small scissors that have been sterilized with alcohol prior to cutting the wire. We suggest that you call our office immediately to schedule an appointment if your brackets or wires need adjusting.

Lost Separator

If you happen to lose a separator at home, call our office as soon as possible to see if it needs to be replaced. It’s common for patients to lose separators during treatment, and we are used to dealing with such issues.
